The Yamas and Niyamas

Everyone who has completed all steps in the program will get a badge.

Program Description

This program will provide you with an overview of the first two limbs of the 8 Limbs of Yoga described in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Each section will contain text broadly explaining the concepts, and a Yin Yoga class that will provide you a greater internal exploration of the concept we are covering. The idea that yoga is only movement is a very westernized take. I'm guilty of this, as most people who practice yoga in the west! This acknowledgement is an important step in recognizing where we may be appropriating the history and culture of yoga instead of honoring and respecting it. Acknowledgement is the key. Paying attention and acknowledging where we may be appropriating a culture is so important in our process of learning and growing to spark change and growth. Physical postures, or asana, are only one of the eight limbs of yoga. For us to have a deeper understanding of the practice and it's real-world implications, it is important to learn the guiding moral principles that influence the practice. The guiding moral principles in yoga are not based upon any particular religion. This is what makes yoga so cool! Yoga allows you to apply your own sets of principles to the ones you see here and invites you to compare, contrast, pick, and prod, and find what works for you. It's the ultimate "you do you". I hope you enjoy! This program is open to annual member holders. All other students must purchase the program separately.
